Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals

Dedications, confirmations, weddings, baptisms, and funerals are not simply key milestones in our lives, but they allow us to glimpse something of God’s eternal love and grace. Here is some more information about each of them:

Dedications

It is always a joy to welcome a new child into the world. Dedicating your child is an opportunity to give thanks to God and to make promises to raise them in the knowledge and love of God within the community of believers.

Dedication is different from baptism, and it involves slightly different promises. Dedication allows your child to choose baptism later in life as a conscious act of faith and commitment to following Jesus.

Confirmations

Confirmation is an opportunity for older children, teenagers and others who were baptised as children to confirm their faith publicly and for themselves.  It marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith into which you were baptised as an infant and your intention to live a life of committed discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the confirming bishop. The Church also asks God to give you power through the Holy Spirit to enable you to live in the way of Jesus.

Confirmation can be a really helpful marker on the journey of discipleship and it’s a way of declaring a commitment to the universal church.

To be Confirmed you must have been baptised at an earlier point in your life. Like baptism, we ask that Confirmation candidates commit to a period of informal but intentional preparation for what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Baptisms

Baptism is an expression of belief, a mark of difference, and a sign of new birth. Baptism represents a person’s acceptance of faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and it is the moment in which a person is welcomed into the life of the church. Wedding Enquiries

Marriage is the union of one man and one woman in the sight of God, each person promising to love, cherish, and protect the other exclusively for as long as they live, according to God’s holy law. Marriage is the rightful context for sexual intimacy and the procreation and nurturing of children. Marriage involves a commitment to support and comfort one another through every season of life.

To get married at St Stephen’s you need to be an active member of the church, resident in our parish, or able to demonstrate a legitimate connection with the church.

Banns of Marriage

If you are getting married in another Anglican church but live in our parish, you will need to have your "banns" read at St Stephen’s on three Sundays before your wedding (as well as the church in which you are getting married).

Funerals

Funerals and journeying through grief can be very difficult times for you and those you love. As a church we are here to help you on that journey.

The first step in arranging a funeral is to approach a local funeral director who will handle most of the details and arrangements with you, including liaising with us. When the funeral director has made contact with us, a member of our team will be in touch with you to plan a service and offer the pastoral support you need.

RENEWAL PROJECT

We are praying tenaciously for a revival of Christian faith in Redditch and beyond.

Conversations started back in March 2023 that place St Stephen’s Redditch at the centre of a regional strategy for renewal in the Anglican church. The rubber is hitting the road now and so beginning in autumn 2024 we’re going to experience some flux.
