The local church is not a business but a family of believers. We are all participants in the flourishing of our church’s life and mission, which includes its finances. Local churches depend long-term on the generous giving of their members. Nobody really likes to talk about money, but it’s important, so here’s how we see things:
Offering our money is an act of worship and ought to be Spirit-led, sacrificial, and joyful.
As followers of Jesus every aspect of our lives, our possessions, and our resources, belong to our Creator and Redeemer. When we observe the early church, they were radically sacrificial and invested in one another and the expansion of the gospel. However much we can give and feel called to give will likely feel costly but should be done with a joyful heart.
‘You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need, and plenty left over to share with others.’
– 2 Corinthians 9:7-8
As good stewards of all God has given us, we handle our finances with integrity and transparency.
We don’t believe in a ‘prosperity gospel’, but we do believe that God provides all we need. We aim to be open about money and how it is being spent and we aim to steward our resources responsibly in obedience to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
“If you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? And if you are not faithful with other people’s things, why should you be trusted with things of your own?... No one can serve two masters…You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”
– Luke 16:11-13

Conversations started back in March 2023 that place St Stephen’s Redditch at the centre of a regional strategy for renewal in the Anglican church. The rubber is hitting the road now and so beginning in autumn 2024 we’re going to experience some flux.
