Baptism

Death to life.

Baptism is a significant moment in the life of every Christian. It is an expression of belief, a mark of difference, and a sign of new birth. Baptism represents a person’s acceptance of faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and it is the moment in which a person is welcomed into the life of the church.

‘That’s what baptism into the life of Jesus means. When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus.’ – Romans 6:3 (MSG)

What’s involved and what can I expect?

Baptism is a moment shared by the whole church family, so all our baptisms take place during a Sunday service.

Baptism is a moment in which promises are made before God and the church family, where a person commits themselves to leave their old life behind and follow Jesus. For infants, this involves promises being made on behalf of a child until they are old enough to own a faith of their own through a service of Confirmation. So, for adults, and parents and Godparents of children, we ask you to commit to a period of preparation which is really relaxed but intentional and it involves talking, praying, and reflecting on the significance and cost of becoming a disciple of Jesus.

For children baptism involves a trickle of water on their head over a font.

For adults we practice ‘full immersion’ baptism where a person is lowered into water and lifted out again.

RENEWAL PROJECT

We are praying tenaciously for a revival of Christian faith in Redditch and beyond.

Conversations started back in March 2023 that place St Stephen’s Redditch at the centre of a regional strategy for renewal in the Anglican church. The rubber is hitting the road now and so beginning in autumn 2024 we’re going to experience some flux.
